ALCo / GE C-424m

These units were part of an order of nine ex-EL and ex-RDG C424s rebuilt by General Electric at Hornell, NY for the D&H in 1980. The locomotives were renumbered #451-456 and #461-463. They received new 2,000 hp 251 prime movers. #451-456 were ex-Conrail, while #461-463 were ex-Genesee & Wyoming.

Three of the units (#461-463) were financed by Genesse & Wyoming for a run through salt train, they took them back in 1985 (dropping the #4 in the road number). #61 has since been wrecked, while #62 and #63 are now on Minnesota Commercial.

The other six units stayed on the D&H. Under Guilford, some of the units were transferred to ST to give D&H some cash to keep going. When the D&H went bankrupt, they took the ST units back. CP apparently didn't want them, and GTI needed the power, so the lease was bought by MEC. Four of the six were eventually sold to the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville in 1997 while the remaining two stayed on GTI property because they were unserviceable.

All were painted blue with yellow nose stripes.

D&H 451 (70)
Recently escaped from the "clutches" of Guilford Transport Industries, D&H C424m 70 languishes at Kenwood yard with locos of the designated operator, NYS&W in October 1990. Although this loco is painted in the "Guilford" colors, the big 'G' has been removed and replaced by the D&H shield. Photo by Neil C. Hunter.
